Colts sign first-rounder Hughes

08/02/2010 - Anderson, IN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Indianapolis Colts have signed defensive end Jerry Hughes, their first-round draft choice.

No terms of the deal were disclosed but the Indianapolis Star is reporting that it is a five-year deal for Hughes, who was the 31st overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Hughes signed his contract in time to join the team for its afternoon practice Monday, the first day of official workouts for the Colts.

The 6-foot-3, 257-pound former running back recorded a career-high 58 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks and 16 1/2 tackles for loss last season in becoming just the second player in TCU history to become a two-time consensus All-American.

Hughes was last season's winner of the Ted Hendricks Award and Lott Trophy and the 2009 Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
