KC bolsters staff; Henderson hangs up boots

12/22/2006 - Kansas City, MO. (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Kansas City Wizards made some moves in the offseason to help bolster its staff on Friday with the addition of assistant coach Kris Kelderman and goalkeeping, strength and conditioning coach David Tenney.

"With the addition of these two guys, we've continued with our goal of assembling the finest staff in Major League Soccer," interim president Robb Heineman said.

Kelderman comes to KC after serving as the technical director at Curt Onalfo Soccer and will reunite with Onalfo through his hiring.

"I've known Kris since I was 17," Kansas City head coach Onalfo said. "He is an extremely hard worker and has an undeniably great ability to see the game tactically and then transfer that on to the players."

Kelderman is no stranger to suiting up for the pitch, playing for Bruce Arena at the University of Virginia from 1987-1990 and then spending seven years in MISL and A-League before joining the MLS and winning two championships with D.C. United in 1996 and 1997.

"The great thing about Kris Kelderman is that he was a very cerebral player when he played," Kansas City technical director Peter Vermes said. "He will bring that same tactical intellect to the coaching ranks."

Tenney played the role of both goalkeeper and strength and conditioning coach at George Mason the past two seasons, also working with numerous youth clubs in the D.C. area since 2003.

"David Tenney is one of the few people in the United States that has distinguished himself as a soccer specific fitness person," Onalfo said. "He has a unique opportunity to prove himself as the best in the business and make sure our players are trained appropriately physically."

Tenney played for Virginia Tech from 1988-1992 before playing for the Baltimore Blast of the NPSL, the Baton Rouge Bombers of the EISL, along with the German 4th Division from 1992-1994.

In other MLS news, after 15 seasons of professional soccer, New York Red Bulls midfielder Chris Henderson has decided to hang up his boots on Friday as Major League Soccer's all-time leader in regular season games played.

"For me to be able to retire feeling great physically, I've been really lucky," Henderson said. "It's been a fun ride since the 1990 World Cup, but I am also looking forward to the new challenges that lie ahead."

Henderson made a total of 317 MLS regular season game and 31 playoff contest appearances that spanned across Colorado, Kansas City, Miami, Columbus and New York.

The midfielder also had an impact on the international game as well, and at age 19 was the youngest player on the 1990 U.S. National Team that qualified for the World Cup in Italy, a first for the Red, White and Blue since 1950.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.

The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.

The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.

MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:

Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)

Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays yesterday and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action.
